The 1998 treasure hunt began with Kate Martin knocking on the door telling about her cat caught up in a tree. Four hunters accompanied her to the back yard where they saw a box with eyes, whiskers, and tail about 12 feet up. Paul Dworkin stood on a chair, climbed up, and retrieved the box which proved to contain many copies of a crossword puzzle.

After ten hours of puzzling plus a dinner break (which included eating enough ice cream to find a clue hidden in a Ben & Jerry's Vermonster) and 15,000 miles of virtual driving around the country, three solving groups met in Albuquerque where a clue told them to find the nearest School. Indian School road suggested one of Craig's t-shirts, which featured Gandhi. Inside the shirt was a message announcing the end of the hunt.

One puzzle among the odd men out was not solved by anyone:
> nightstick
> peace
> stop
> tunnel
